Clover Meadow
August 2-4, 2002
Another tremendous Trail Crew. 42 people did
work on the meadow itself, removing young trees and completing
reconstructive work on the campgrounds there. Also, we did work on
the Fernandez Trailhead, adding gravel to the driveway and parking
lot, and defining the actual beginning of trails. Even the kids got
in on the fun by helping remove some of the loose debris.
We removed trees from the Granite Creek
trail...and saw two rattlesnakes...
The California Highway Patrol thrilled the kids
by landing their helicopter on Clover Meadow. The fight crew joined
us for turkey dinner Saturday night. They gave us all a tour of the
helicopter and then we watched as it took off. The kids thoroughly
enjoyed the event! It was very generous of them to fly in and
dedicate so much time explaining the aircraft and allowing us to
view the interior... Of course, the lure of a complete turkey dinner
made it a little easier to make that decision... All kidding aside,
the webmaster has been present at several appearances by the Highway
Patrol Helicopter and the flight crews are always very gracious and
patient with the questions from young children. These folks do a
great job for the community and they deserve our thanks!
THANK YOU!
Again, as in past trips, if you have some pics
let's see 'em! tarheel@sierratel.com

The whole group gathered in Clover Meadow
to get a tour of the helicopter and pose for the group
picture.

Kurt Michaels and Cathy Lee enjoy their
turkey dinner.

Steve ( )and Mike Brown, Pilot and his
wife Andrea Brown, also a flight officer for the
CHP.
Notice the plates that appear to have
been licked clean. Ya think they enjoyed Dutch Oven Turkey
with dressing, beans, mashed potatoes, rolls and apple pie for
dessert?

Michael Olwyler, Recreational Officer for
the Bass Lake Ranger District of the Sierra National Forest
addressing the group offering his
thanks.

Mike Crain, Flight Officer for the CHP
standing guard, protecting us from the bears that were
watching from the bushes licking their
chops.

Mike Ede's gorgeous wife and daughter,
Kim and Amy.
This was their first trail crew after
Mike and Sam had attended two, they wanted to see what the
excitement was about.

Santa guarding the limited quantity of
mashed potatoes, and Marshall Allington negotiating another
serving.

Base camp; taken Saturday evening as the
Thanksgiving Dinner was being
served.

Ever hear of cooking turkeys in a dutch
oven? Our cooks Frances and Carol know how to do it. It was
excellent!

Shane introducing a shy Lea (pronounced
lee-ah) to the group; she injured her arm during the last
trail crew, and came back asking for work she could do with
one arm. Shane arranged for her to stay in the plush
accommodations usually occupied by Forest Service
personnel...

This was her welcome sign as she arrived
in camp. Her room was a cabin with warm bed, shower and
refrigerator. Our thanks to the Forest Service for allowing us
to use the cabin for Lea's
stay.
